How to throw a legendary Australia Day party

2 min read

It’s 2017, summer is in full swing and Australia Day is almost here...

Whether you’re heading to the beach, a mate’s backyard or you’re throwing your own barbie, we’ve got the perfect suggestions to make this year’s Australia Day party totally legendary.

Play that funky music

What kind of party has no music? You need to crank up the tunes, but you also need to make sure you have the right music to set the mood. Create a playlist made up of all the Aussie faves – we’re thinking Kylie, Sia, AC/DC, Gotye and of course Men at Work to name just a few. ORRR just stick Nova on… You’ll be guaranteed the best music to party to.

All the cheese

An awesome party platter is a must. It’s perfect to keep your guests happy while the food is cooking. If you’re not sure how to create the ultimate cheese platter, check out Chrissie Swan’s calls with Nova listeners from around the country…

Fun and games

You need to keep your guests entertained and what better way than a spot of backyard cricket? Or if you’re lucky enough to have a pool or be on the beach, throw some inflatables in there too.

Chops and snags

A bbq needs meat and plenty of it. Whether you want lamb, beef, pork, kangaroo or emu, make sure your guests will never run out of meat. You don’t want to be THAT host. Oh, and don’t forget to throw another “shrimp” on the barbie!

Just desserts

Once your guests have got over the meat sweats, they’ll definitely be craving something sweet. Put out some Pavlova, lamingtons and fairy bread and they’ll be happy!

Those decs

Giant Australia flags, inflatable kangaroos, cuddly koalas – all of these things need to be at your party.

Everybody's free (to wear sunscreen)

Boring, yes, but important. It’s summer and you don’t want to end the day looking like a lobster, not to mention the health risks. Either cover up or slap on the factor 50.

DRINK

Last but not least (and we feel this almost goes without saying), you need to have plenty of chilled drinks to hand. Whether it’s beer, wine or cider, keep an Esky filled with them so we can toast our great nation all day long.
