New research set to rock the boat one year after Mama June’s gastric sleeve
What does this mean?!
It’s been one year since Here Comes Honey Boo Boo star Mama June Shannon underwent gastric sleeve, breast augmentation and excess skin surgeries dropping down to a US size 4 from 208-odd kilograms.
While doctors were able to do some things for the reality TV star’s health, they have yet to be able to repair her eyes; Mama June has been legally blind from childhood cataracts.
“She can't have surgery because they believe it could do more harm than good,' a TLC spokesperson told MailOnline. “The damage is that bad.”
But things might be about to change for the Georgia native.
New research from the University of Melbourne and Leeds Beckett University in Leeds studying how weight loss impacts the eyes.
According to the study, the vascular structure of the retina can be affected by obesity-related illness such as hypertension and diabetes.
The results? Promising according to the authors:
“The findings suggest obesity-related microvascular changes are reversible after bariatric surgery-induced weight loss,” they explain.
“The capacity for the retinal microvasculature to improve following bariatric surgery suggests plasticity of the human microvasculature early in the disease course.”
Fingers crossed this changes things for the star and others with the same affliction.
