CW: Graphic content.

Shocking footage has emerged of a man stoning a terrified wombat to death in South Australia.

The footage was uploaded to Facebook by the Wombat Awareness Organisation with the caption, "Heartbroken... this is tragic."

Taken on the Eyre Peninsula, the video shows the man laughing and throwing rocks while being encouraged by an unseen friend.

The wombat can be seen running to escape as the men chase after him.

"You've got him, you've got him, hit him, hit him. Kill him!" the man in the car can be heard saying.

As the man throwing rocks manages to achieve the sickening goal, his friend says, "Yeah! You did it! First man I've ever seen kill a wombat on foot, bro."

The footage is here but please be warned, it's graphic and distressing to watch.

A petition asking for justice names the man as an off-duty police officer.

A South Australia Police spokesperson told Nova:

"South Australia Police are aware of a social media video depicting an incident involving a man inflicting injuries upon a wombat. At this time SAPOL can confirm they are taking the situation very seriously and are closely examining the video.

An inquiry is being undertaken into this matter to first formally identify the man; and then take appropriate action as required. There is no further comment at this time."
